Research

Smallholder productivity, crop commercialization and household food insecurity in Ethiopia

My research uses household survey and panel data from Ethiopia to study how smallholder farmers produce and sell, and how households cope when shocks hit. Most of it is applied microeconometrics: stochastic frontier models, instrumental variables and panel data methods.

Interests

Smallholder productivity

Technical efficiency and input adoption on Ethiopian farms, measured with stochastic frontier models.

Crop commercialization

Whether farmers who sell more of their cereal harvest are more efficient. My Ghent thesis used instrumental variables to answer it, and I am reworking it into a paper on productivity misallocation.

Food insecurity and shocks

How exposed urban and rural households are when a shock hits the whole economy, and whether the urban advantage in food security holds up.
